Anniversary
Learning to live in peace - 150 years of Schneller Schools in the Middle East (2010)
In 1860 Johann Ludwig Schneller, a Swabian teacher, founded the Syrian orphanage in Jerusalem. He took in children without asking about their religion. His motto was: that they may earn an honest living. Today the two Schneller Schools, the Johann-Ludwig-Schneller School in Lebanon and the Theodor-Schneller School in Jordan continue this work. They are supported and accompanied by the Evangelical Society for the Schneller Schools (EVS), a German registered association.
Different events have been planned for the anniversary year of 2010, such as a peace education consultation in Amman. The exhibition “Living in dignity” was opened on 26 February 2010 at the church archive in Stuttgart-Möhringen. In addition, materials and support is available to groups and congregations.
The theme of the anniversary is programmatic: Christian and Muslim children live together at the two Schneller schools in Lebanon and Jordan. Many come from refugee families or difficult family circumstances, quite a few having suffered some form of violence. The boarding schools give the children a sense of security. They take children from the surrounding area and some of them can stay on later to learn a trade in the workshops. The children learn the rules of peaceful coexistence and learn to respect the religion of the other.
You will find plenty of information about the history and present day work of the Schneller Schools in the anniversary reader.
