The EMS Partner Church in Japan
The United Church of Christ in Japan (KYODAN)
The first Protestant missionaries landed in Japan in 1859. By state decree, all the Evangelical confessions represented in the country were united into a single church in 1941, thus founding the United Church of Christ in Japan (KYODAN). Religious freedom was only granted after World War II. The Lutheran and Anglican communities left the church union and the KYODAN was re-organised. Today, our partner church has around 200,000 parish members and about 2,000 pastors of both genders. The church is member of the National Christian Council of Japan (NCCJ).
