Peace project: a Future for AIDS orphans
![]() |
In South Africa, there are more than one million AIDS orphans. By the year 2010, the number will have reached about two million.
The Masangane AIDS programme initiated by the Moravian Church in South Africa, partner church of the EMS, helps mainly orphans and young mothers who have been infected by HIV. With the help of grants, children are able to continue attending school. Young mothers who have been infected receive anti-retroviral treatment and are looked after by Masangane volunteer workers.
The name “Masangane” means “embrace” and illustrates what the project is aiming at: establishing closeness with persons who are HIV positive. They are often still ostracised and stigmatised. The project is attempting to integrate them into the community.
